    Keeping Your Cooling System In Top Shape

    The liquid that runs through the radiator and cooling system of your vehicle does a really important job in keeping your engine running at the correct temperature. Whilst essentially water will do this job in typical cases and climates, other additives are required to ensure the system doesn’t fail through the formation of rust and corrosion. Extremes in temperature, both hot and cold require the addition of Anti-Freeze to raise the boiling point and also lower the freezing point of the water.
    A common misconception is that coolant will help the engine run at a lower temperature on the temperature gauge. This is a myth but given the common term for the additive put into radiators is ‘COOLANT’ it is understandable how this has come about. Some manufacturers will specify a type of coolant and even a dilution ratio for particular vehicles and this should always be adhered to. Use the coolant manufacturer’s listings as your guide. These are referred to as TYPE A coolants.
    Other vehicles will simply require a corrosion inhibitor to protect against rust and corrosion and keep the cooling system clean. These are referred to as TYPE B coolants. A typical car operating in normal Australian conditions will usually require only this type of additive, unless specified otherwise by the vehicle manufacturer.
    However vehicles being used in extremely cold environments, such as snow, should always use a TYPE A coolant to prevent the cooling system from freezing while the vehicle is parked. Also those operating in very hot conditions or being subjected to extreme loads such as heavy towing should also use a TYPE A coolant to protect by raising the boiling point of the fluid to help prevent overheating. TYPE A are available in concentrated form and in pre-mixed form, whilst TYPE B are usually concentrated.


    Contains anti-freeze and anti-boil components such as ethylene glycol or propylene glycol which lower the freezing point of water making it more resistant to extreme cold and at the same time raises the boiling point of water. These are available in different colours (typically green, red and blue) to match that used by the vehicle manufacturer.
    Another differentiator is the life expectancy of the coolant with up to 8 years protection now stated on some products.
