Autobarn Know How

Keeping your common rail diesel engine running like new

Modern diesel engines are hi-tech beasts. They deliver outstanding performance and fuel economy, but there are some things you need to know to keep them running like new.
For emission purposes most “Common Rail” diesel engines re-direct any unburnt fumes and crankcase gases back into the inlet manifold via the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. This is good in theory; however it creates a problem where this hot oily mist meets with the cool incoming air in the inlet plenum, forming a thick sludge that sticks to everything in its path. This can create all sorts of havoc inside the manifold, EGR valve, throttle body and even the turbo. It’s a big and messy job to clean it out and can be quite expensive. In the worst cases, it can be terminal for the engine.
But you can avoid all this by fitting an aftermarket diesel catch can such as the FLASHLUBE CATCH CAN PRO.
It works by sitting in the line of flow between the engine’s crankcase breather to filter the oil mist out of the fumes being directed back into the inlet manifold.
Unlike catch cans used in performance engines that are usually hollow inside, this has an internal filter and a series of relief valves to ensure that only clean air passes through to the manifold.
