Are Your Headlights Letting You Down?

For most drivers the only time a headlight globe is replaced is if it stops working, but there are others who want to improve their vision when driving at night. Think about it, just about every decision you make whilst driving is based on your vision so the better you can see at night, the safer your driving experience will be.

In the old days headlights were made from glass, and to make them brighter we would fit higher wattage globes. The higher the wattage though, the more heat is produced; most cars made since the mid 90’s have polycarbonate headlights which will melt if subjected to extra heat so this approach no longer works.

These days different technology is used to change the light colour (measured in Kelvin) and beam distance without increasing wattage or running temperature of the globe. Some upgrade globes will have a whiter appearance, others have standard light colour but will produce a longer beam. Some now are a combination of both. The higher the Kelvin rating, the whiter the light produced will be.

The most important things to remember when choosing headlight globe upgrades are:
  • Whiter light globes are better suited to modern vehicles with non optic headlights
  • Longer light globes are a better choice for older drivers, or those that wear glasses or contact lenses, particularly when driving at night

Lastly, and most importantly, all this amounts to little if the headlight lens has deteriorated and turned yellow. This can easily be rectified with a DIY headlight restoration kit.
