    4WD Recovery

Getting out into Australia’s great country with your 4WD is one of the best ways to spend time with family and friends. Doing it safely means you have the right gear to get you out of trouble.

Safety Tips: Never use a standard tow bar or tow ball in recovery situations as these are not designed to take the sort of stress a snatch strap or winch can put on them. Only use professionally fitted and rated recovery points on the vehicle.

    1. Tyre Recovery Gear

1a. Tyre Deflator / Gauge - Travelling on soft surfaces requires deflating your tyres to avoid becoming bogged. A tyre deflator can help you achieve the correct pressure.

1b. Recovery Tracks - Rubber, roll up or hard plastic recovery tracks are a common device to help provide traction under tyres.

1c. Air Compressor – Once a leak has been plugged or tyres need to be inflated after deflating, make sure you choose a reliable heavy duty product.

1d. High Lift Jack– Used to lift the vehicle generally when stuck in ruts or soft ground so a recovery track can be placed under the wheel. If used to changed a tyre, ensure you attach the high lift jack to an approved jacking point on the vehicle.

    2. Basic Recovery Gear

2a. Foldable Shovel and Pick – Used to dig around bogged tyres.

2b. Bow Shackles – Their curved design provides extra recovery leverage when you attach a strap to your vehicle. Always attach these to a designated recovery point on the vehicle.

2c. Snatch Strap – If you become bogged, a snatch strap can be used to get out of trouble. Snatch straps consist of nylon webbing which has built-in elasticity that stretches to around 10 - 20%.

2d. Winch Cable Damper Blanket – This safety device reduces the risk of injury in the event of straps or cables breaking during recovery.

2e. Snatch/Pulley Block - Improves the functionality of your winch by increasing pulling power and gives you more leverage options.

    3. Extreme Recovery Gear

3a. Winch – Considered the ultimate recovery and a must have item, when travelling alone or in a group. This is your off-road insurance policy, available with different features including the growing popularity of synthetic rope.

3b. Winch Extension Strap – is required when the reach of your regular winch cable is not long enough.
